Best Design Settings for Quality DTG Prints

Edited

DTG, or Direct-to-Garment printing, is best for soft, detailed church shirts with a natural feel. Since DTG prints ink directly into the fabric, print quality depends on both the artwork and the garment.

1. Use High-Quality Artwork

Submit artwork at 300 DPI for the sharpest print.

Low-resolution files can print blurry, pixelated, or soft, especially on church logos, scripture designs, event shirts, and artwork with small text or fine details.

2. Submit PNG Files

PNG files are recommended because they preserve quality and clean edges.

Use a high-resolution PNG that is already sized correctly for print. Avoid screenshots, compressed images, or files saved from social media because they may not print clearly.

3. Keep the Design Clear

DTG works best with clean artwork, strong contrast, readable text, and intentional color choices.

Digital artwork usually prints more consistently than photographs. Photos can still be used, but they may need extra preparation so details, tones, and contrast print well on fabric.

4. Prepare Faded Effects Correctly

DTG is a good choice for soft, faded, or vintage-style designs because the ink prints into the fabric.

If the design includes fades, shadows, distressed effects, or soft edges, those effects should be prepared intentionally in the artwork. Avoid relying on actual transparency, low-opacity layers, or semi-transparent pixels because they may not print exactly as they appear on screen, especially on darker garments.

For more predictable results, create faded effects using solid colors, texture, halftones, or properly prepared gradients.

5. Choose the Right Garment

DTG performs best on high-cotton garments, especially ring spun cotton. Lighter-colored shirts often produce the most vibrant and accurate results.

Dark garments may require a white underbase, which can slightly affect the feel and appearance of the print. DTG may not be ideal for heavy polyester, thick blends, or orders that need the same design across many fabric types and colors.

Final Thoughts

DTG is a strong option for church merch when the artwork is high-resolution, the design is prepared correctly, and the garment is suitable for DTG printing.
